Continuum Attractions Purchase GreenWood Forest Park

Continuum Attractions announces that the company has purchased GreenWood Forest Park, Y Felinheli, North Wales. The sale went through on Monday 17th July 2017.

Continuum Attractions has bought GreenWood Forest Park because it is a successful and award winning family adventure park business and an unmissable opportunity for the business to expand into the family, outdoor attraction market.

They operate heritage and entertainment themed attractions across the UK and are thrilled to be adding an outdoor business to their portfolio.

Continuum Attractions celebrate The ‘Story’ of their Success

Continuum Attractions is currently seeing a significant increase in visitor numbers across the business and their research suggests that this is due to their visitor’s desire for a good story.

The company has always been at the forefront of the UK attractions industry through the presentation of well told stories in fascinating locations.

The Jorvik Viking Centre, which was opened by the company in 1984, was hugely innovative in terms of immersing visitors into ‘History as a Story’. For the first time, visitors could touch and smell things and really experience the stories and history of the subject rather than view it quietly from behind barriers and glass cases.

CEO Juliana Delaney, who has been with the company from the very beginning, is known for joking: “Our story begins with a hole in the ground but that’s all very much in our past now”

33 years later, the company certainly has come a long way, working with over 100 visitor attractions across the world and currently operating 9 attractions in the UK in Edinburgh, Leeds, Oxford, Canterbury, Gwynedd, Cardiff, Portsmouth and York, where the head office is based.

Each attraction tells a unique neighbourhood story, from the amazing warren of streets frozen in time beneath Edinburgh’s Royal Mile to celebrating the famous tales of Chaucer or the iconic Yorkshire based drama -Emmerdale.

Group Head of Sales and Marketing, Julie Ozbek attests the continued success of the company to the storytelling.

“Our visitors love the stories that we tell and the interactive way that we deliver them. Our own research confirms that experiences that highlight history and nostalgia are now more in demand than ever.

We know that more people are staying in the UK for their leisure time now as well as overseas visitors coming into the country.

Other factors are likely to have had an effect on our increased admission numbers. Recent concerns over the safety of the city of London may also have contributed to visitors considering other key tourism destinations within the UK. Cities like York and Edinburgh appear to be becoming more popular as destinations. Because these cities have been a less obvious choice, particularly to international travellers in the past, visitors are more interested to learn about the broader UK heritage and the unique stories of the places that they are experiencing.” 

Many potential visitors might know that York was home to Vikings but are delighted to learn more about how it is the UK’s home of Chocolate at York’s Chocolate Story. This attraction in particular has seen a 12% increase in visitors from 2016 while Oxford Castle Unlocked, which tells the story of the city’s Norman castle turned prison is 13% up on the previous year.

The majority of the attractions are fully guided and offer interactive elements which appeal to visitors of all ages. The theatrical and innovative presentations mean that visitors come away informed and entertained which can be confirmed by consistently positive feedback and various awards and accreditations.

Continuum Attractions have turned storytelling into a hugely effective enterprise and have established themselves as experts in the leisure industry. With a portfolio spanning over 3 decades, the story of the company’s success is certainly not a thing of the past but a potential for further success.

Continuum Attractions Directors Visit Greenwood Forest Park

There have been some new faces on site at GreenWood Forest Park this week.

The directors of Continuum Attractions, the company that purchased the park earlier in July, have been onsite getting to know the staff and guests, they are delighted with the purchase and are committed to maintaining the wonderful feel at Y Felinheli.

CEO: Juliana Delaney has strong connections to the area with relatives living in Bethel and Caernarfon. She has been a frequent visitor to the local area since she was 2 years old and is well known for professing the beauty and charms of North Wales.

She says:

“We are thrilled to have added GreenWood Forest Park to the Continuum Attractions family. North Wales is a place very dear to my heart and a region that has a fantastic future for tourism. The park is already such a great day out for guests with a passionate team dedicated to providing the very best experience for everyone. Myself and the rest of the team at Continuum Attractions look forward to working with our new colleagues to continue this for years to come.   

The former owners Steve and Andrea Bristow, who set up the business 25 years ago, made the decision to retire to enjoy more time to travel and spend with family. York based Continuum Attractions operates visitor experiences across the UK and has a long history of managing successful family friendly attractions.

Praise in Scottish Parliament for The Real Mary King’s Close and British Travel Awards

Gordon Lindhurst, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Member of Scottish Parliament for the Lothian region has praised 2 Edinburgh visitor attractions, The Real Mary King’s Close and Edinburgh Castle while speaking in Parliament last week. The city centre attractions have both been shortlisted for Best UK Heritage Attraction Award at the upcoming British Travel Awards. A prestigious list of only 5 attractions across the UK.

Mr Lindhurst lodged a motion for congratulations with the Scottish Parliament on Friday 7th July supported by 18 other Members:

“The Parliament congratulates everyone at The Real Mary King’s Close and Edinburgh Castle on the attractions being nominated for the Best UK Heritage Attraction Award at the British Travel Awards. Recognises the value of The Real Mary King’s Close attraction in the telling of Old Town Edinburgh in the 17th Century, including the lives of the people who lived within the tenement buildings and the devastating effects of the plague on the local populations; understands that since opening in 2003 the attraction has been one of the most popular in Edinburgh city centre for tourists.”  

Mr Lindhurst then went on to say that:

“being part of a shortlist of five across the UK is testament to the value that Edinburgh holds in terms of UK Heritage” before going on to wish everyone at The Real Mary King’s Close, including the operators, Continuum Attractions all the very best ahead of the announcement of the award on the 29th November.

2017 is the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, a celebration of Scotland’s people, traditions, distinct culture, landscapes, attractions and icons, as well as hidden gems.

Lights Out for Earth Hour

March 25th marks the 10th anniversary of the WWF Earth Hour campaign, the world’s largest demonstration of support for action on climate change. The teams across our attractions will be joining in to raise awareness and take part in the ‘switch-off’ at 8.30pm. We’re challenging our teams to have not just an electric-light free hour – but an hour with no electricity at all! No lights, no computers, no TV…

The Tower goes dark

Throughout the year we light up Emirates Spinnaker Tower for various charities (most recently we went blue for World Water Day), but on March 25th Emirates Spinnaker Tower will go dark, as all non-essential lighting is turned off to mark Earth Day.

All our attraction’s websites will also feature a ‘black-out’ banner to raise awareness.

Our commitment to green

Across Continuum Attractions and our support office, we have been working hard to improve our commitment to fighting climate change. We now have a nominated Green Ambassador at each attraction, led by a central Green Champion. This committee work together to help us in this endeavour and come up with new green initiatives. We’re working to reduce the amount of energy we produce as well as buying less environmentally damaging goods and reducing or recycling waste wherever we can. RSPB-led consortium to manage Sherwood Forest Country Park

Today is International Day of Forests so we wanted to re-post our announcement about our involvement with one of the UK’s finest: Sherwood Forest.

We’re delighted to announce our involvement in the consortium led by the RSPB – the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds – which has been named as the preferred bidder to design, build and operate a new visitor centre and to manage the stunning natural habitats within Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest Country Park.

One of the UK’s leading nature conservation charities – the RSPB has come out on top in a procurement process organised by Nottinghamshire County Council for a new visitor centre and to take on the conservation management of Sherwood Forest Country Park, which forms part of Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve.

Our Group Attractions Director Kevin Smith said: “Continuum Attractions is delighted to be part of the RSPB-led consortium which will breathe new life into Sherwood Forest Country Park and develop a new visitor centre. The shared expertise across the consortium will deliver a sustainable future for the Sherwood Forest visitor experience.”

The RSPB led consortium will also feature The Sherwood Forest Trust and Thoresby Estate as part of a £5.3m investment programme.

The visitor centre will be designed and built over the coming years and will provide a completely new facility and visitor experience for the people of Nottinghamshire and beyond to enjoy and celebrate the woodland, wildlife and heritage of the site. Around 350,000 visitors visit Nottinghamshire’s world-famous Sherwood Forest country park each year and the hugely successful Robin Hood Festival will again take place next year. The County Council’s management contract also requires the preferred bidder to deliver on effective conservation of the country park within the wider NNR, which features England’s Tree of the Year, the Major Oak.

Introducing… Andrew Turner

Our General Managers are the exceptional individuals in charge of each attraction. They have busy but rewarding jobs making sure everything and everyone in our attractions is working smoothly and ensuring our guests leave with the best memories of their visit.

To find out more about what the role entails, we talked to the latest addition to the General Management team, Andrew Turner, who joined York’s Chocolate Story in October.

“I think I have joined Continuum at a very exciting time. I think the business has a great future. The company is certainly in growth and its partnerships with iconic partners such as ITV shows that the business is a major player in the attraction industry. I am excited to be working within one of the attractions and I am already looking forward to what may be the next acquisition to the portfolio.

“Before working at York’s Chocolate Story I was working as Head of Operations for Merlin Entertainments. During this time I worked at various sites including Scarborough SEALIFE Centre, The National SEALIFE Centre and most recently The York Dungeon. My working career actually started just down the road at Flamingo Land Theme Park where I undertook the role of Food and Beverage Manager.

“The biggest difference about working at York’s Chocolate Story is seeing daylight! The Dungeon was a challenging place to work as the lighting is dark and there is no natural light within the actual attraction. The fact that at York’s Chocolate Story I have the opportunity to walk around the attraction and engage with guests is something that I have missed. Another big difference is taking the role of GM, having the responsibility to develop the vision for success and drive this through the team is a huge responsibility and very challenging.

“My ambition for York’s Chocolate Story is simple, to make it the number one paid for visitor attraction in York. A big statement for a business that is not even five years old, however the growth seen year on year proves that over the next three years this is achievable. York has an amazing history and its heritage proves this is the City of Chocolate, I want York’s Chocolate Story to be the driving force behind telling this unique and exceptional story to the people of York and tourists to the city.

“I think the fact that our offering fits so well with the City is one of the best things about working at York’s Chocolate Story. When we have guests visiting the attraction who then go on to tell us about their work history in one of the factories – that’s amazing. Every week there is someone willing to share a story or tell a tale of their experience, we have even re-worked our scripts to incorporate some of the stories as they have been so interesting.

“It hasn’t all been plain sailing though… my most embarrassing moment so far happened when I tried to perform the chocolate demonstration to a group of guests, I thought it would be easy for me to hand temper some chocolate and “assist” in the demonstration. There is a good reason why people attend patisserie and chocolate making courses – it is a skill! While I didn’t help in any way, shape or form the group had a good giggle at my expense.

“Whilst I’m not sick of chocolate yet, I am sick of my family sending me in to work with a shopping list every week, high street chocolate just does not compare in my house anymore!”

Andy is proving to be an excellent addition to the Continuum family and we look forward to seeing where York’s Chocolate Story will go under his leadership.

Group Head of Sales & Marketing joins the team

We’re excited to announce the appointment of Jules Ozbek as our new Group Head of Sales & Marketing.

Ozbek joins us following four years with English Heritage as Marketing Manager for the North of England, having previously worked for Northern Film, Business and Enterprise North East and the National Railway Museum.

We also recently announced two new visitor experiences in partnership with ITV: Coronation Street On Tour in Glasgow and the Emmerdale Studio Experience in Leeds.

Emmerdale Studio Experience

We are pleased to announce our latest visitor attraction in partnership with ITV, the Emmerdale Studio Experience.

ITV’s Burley Road Studios in central Leeds will open to the public on 3 September 2016 to showcase a ‘behind the scenes’ guided tour of one of ITV’s best loved soaps. The 1,300 sqm attraction will be a unique chance to step into the world of television, with full scale set reconstructions, props, costumes and interactive experiences allowing guests to try their hand at TV-making.

The new visitor attraction will create 50 jobs in Leeds and looks to welcome 150,000 visitors in its first calendar year. Due to the anticipated demand, Ticketmaster UK has been appointed as the attraction’s preferred ticketing agent.

The attraction follows the resounding success of Coronation Street The Tour, which welcomed over 850,000 visitors to the home of Corrie and generated over £60m for Manchester’s economy in its 18 month run.

Following the phenomenal feedback from Coronation Street The Tour, we recognise the fascination audiences’ feel when they go behind the scenes of their favourite shows. Leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Judith Blake said:

Corrie on Tour: Street sets to tour UK

We are pleased to announce our plans to take Coronation Street’s iconic sets on tour around the UK, premiering at the SECC in Glasgow from 27th August 2016.

A bespoke 2000 sqm show dome – the biggest of its kind in the UK – will showcase iconic sets, props and costumes from the world’s longest-running TV soap opera.

The touring experience follows the resounding success of Coronation Street The Tour in Manchester, which welcomed over 850,000 visitors to the soap’s original Quay Street sets during its 18 month run.

Juliana Delaney, our Chief Executive comments:

“After we closed the doors to Coronation Street The Tour in December 2015, we recognised a huge unfulfilled demand from elsewhere in the UK. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to take Corrie on tour to allow more fans to get closer to their favourite television show.”

Coronation Street On Tour will subsequently relocate to Belfast next spring, subject to planning permission.

Team Continuum tackle Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge

Seven Continuum Attractions colleagues put their best feet forward on Saturday, taking part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks for our company charity, Alzheimer’s Society.

Following the 25-mile trek over Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent, our determined team of walkers raised almost £2,000 for the charity, adding to our overall fundraising total of over £4,000 so far.

Becky Romans, our Charity Champion commented:

“We decided to take on the arduous challenge of the Yorkshire Three Peaks for our friends and family members who have been affected by this life-changing disease. We’re thrilled to have raised a substantial amount of money for a worthy cause close to our hearts.”

Jeremy Hughes, Chief Executive at Alzheimer’s Society, said:

“We are delighted that Continuum Attractions gave their time to support Alzheimer’s Society.  225,000 will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes. As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals like the team at Continuum to help us continue our vital work.”

EU Referendum – statement from our CEO

“On behalf of our industry and Continuum Attractions I have been clear that we should remain inside the EU; leaving the European Union was a sad decision that has the potential to damage our business, Britain’s economy and Europe’s stability. Democracy has given us a decision and we accept  and respect the majority vote.

“To quote Sir Richard Branson: ‘Now is not the time for further complaints and anger. Now is the time to come together as a nation and heal the wounds created by the divisive tone and aggressive rhetoric that has dominated this campaign. The UK and its amazing, resilient people have weathered many storms – with determination, resolve and sense of what is right. Those qualities will be needed over the testing months and years to come.’

“To put it in the words of the late Jo Cox, “’we are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us. It’s time to build on that as the UK navigates the choppy waters ahead.’

“The reason why tourism is so successful in this country, is because our country has so much to offer.  People come to Britain because of our extraordinary heritage, our beautiful landscapes, our great sporting events, our art, some of the finest museums in the world, and our music.

“All of these are why people come to visit Britain.  It was the case last week, it is the case this week, and it will be the case next week.”
