What's in a name? Why there’s a new name and look for Oxford Castle & Prison
17th Jun 2026
Sometimes, the smallest changes can tell the biggest stories.
This summer, one of our most iconic attractions underwent a subtle but significant rebrand. Oxford Castle & Prison is now Oxford Castle Prison.
At first glance, the change amounts to little more than the removal of an ampersand. However, the decision was driven by a much bigger question: are we presenting the attraction in a way that truly reflects the experience visitors have when they arrive?
At Continuum Attractions, we are constantly reviewing how our sites engage audiences and how our brands communicate what makes each attraction unique. As part of this process, we took a fresh look at Oxford Castle Prison's positioning.
The attraction's history spans more than 1,000 years, from its origins as a Norman castle to its later role as a prison. Both elements remain fundamental to the site's story. However, visitor feedback, guest reviews and audience insights consistently highlighted the powerful human stories connected to the prison as the aspect that resonated most strongly with visitors.
Stories of crime, punishment and reform provide a compelling lens through which guests can explore Britain's social history. These narratives are often what visitors remember long after they leave the attraction.
The rebrand reflects this insight. Rather than presenting the attraction as an equal split between castle and prison, the new identity places greater emphasis on the prison experience while continuing to celebrate the site's medieval heritage.
Alongside the name change, a refreshed visual identity has been introduced across digital platforms, marketing materials and visitor communications, creating a clearer and more consistent brand presence.
The result is not a new attraction, but a clearer expression of what has always made Oxford Castle Prison special: authentic storytelling, immersive guided experiences and the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the people who shaped its remarkable history.
For Continuum Attractions, the project is a reminder that effective branding is not always about dramatic change. Sometimes it is about finding the simplest way to tell a story more clearly. Check out our new look brand here.
